Thinking of joining Friends of Pine Gully?

18 July 2021

Welcome!

Thank you for considering becoming a volunteer to help care for Pine Gully. The Friends have been restoring and maintaining this important area for nearly 5 years, and we hope you will enjoy contributing to these efforts. The site is important for the community more broadly and has many significant indigenous plants. Our group aims to create a relaxed and friendly working atmosphere. There are nevertheless some important things that new people should know so that our activities run safely and enjoyably.

Times and places

First Sunday of each month is our usual working day on-site, with ad hoc arrangements on other days. Matters such as the weather and holiday absences sometimes affect arrangements.

As a rule, a number of members will be present from about 9.30 – 11:00 am on Sunday. For safety reasons, members should not work alone. Most members bring a packed lunch and we eat together around noon.

Legal issues

We are not yet an independent Incorporated Association, So we operate under Holdfast Bay council guidance and Trees for Life for the purposes of occupational health and safety and receive general support and advice from them.

We are insured through Natural Resources, Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges (commonly called the NRM). Although we are volunteers we have responsibilities.

Safety - a priority.

1. Members must sign in and out so that we have a record of who is present and the hours worked. This includes our own form plus a Trees for Life safety assessment form.

2. Appropriate safety equipment and tools will be provided. Gloves, safety glasses and high-visibility jackets must be worn, as well as long trousers, long sleeves and solid shoes or boots. Weed poisoning and the use of heavy equipment such as chainsaws require special safety techniques and supervision.

3. Directions of the on-site supervisor must be followed. This is Bruce Wilson or his nominees. These people, and most current members, have undertaken training in a range of areas such as occupational health and safety, snake awareness, first aid and safe chemical handling, and have participated in a site hazards assessment exercise.

4. Wear sun or rain protection as needed.

5. Bring water to keep yourself hydrated.

6. We have two first aid kits in our toolbox. These must be taken near to where volunteers are working.
